Newell Award
Barbara and King Newell established the Newell Award in 1997 with the purpose of helping our Centre survive during a time when the government was drastically reducing financial support for the Arts. King Newell thought that setting this example would encourage others to donate money so that the ICAC would continue to survive and thrive. At the same time, he would give public recognition to individuals who have helped make the Centre such a successful enterprise. He felt that such individuals are of inestimable value to our community. The ICAC continues this legacy by annually recognizing an individual who has had a positive impact on the Centre.
2026 Newell Award Winner: Pat Palmer
Pat has been a member of the Centre for 17 years and is active as a fibre artist and rug hooker. Her volunteerism spans from being on the Quilt Guild executive and the ICAC Board of Directors, currently as Chair. Pat also teaches and leads workshops as well as a summer camp program for teens at the ICAC. She shares her knowledge and encouragements during studio time with fellow members. Her positive energy, ideas, and ambition are contagious. She has initiated and/or been involved in projects, such as Members’ Sharing and the Artful Alliance exhibition as well as the Chicken Challenge, Sheep Shenanigans and Yard Sale fundraisers, all of which promote connection and collaboration across the Centre’s artistic disciplines. Pat readily steps up not just to volunteer, but to lead. She is a thoughtful, considerate listener as well as a collaborative facilitator and team-player. She actively promotes the Centre to others, whether it be to join the ICAC or to take part in a class.
When Pat sees a challenge, opportunity, or job that needs doing, she takes action with her trademark enthusiastic, positive, get-it-done approach. Congratulations, Pat, and thank you for your dedicated volunteerism at the Centre!
